Past Year Review (PYR)

Tim Ferriss's popular yearly reflection - the Past Year Review (PYR) has been something I've been doing for a few years now and I find it easy to derive some high level takeaways without getting bogged down in the details.

Check out the full instructions on how to do your own PYR on Tim's website but the essence of the practice is as follows:

  1. Create a POSITIVE and NEGATIVE column on a notepad.
  2. Review your calendar week by week for the past year.
  3. List people, activities, or commitments that triggered strong positive or negative emotions under the respective column.
  4. Identify the top 20% from each column that consistently caused the strongest emotions.
  5. Focus on scheduling more of the positive items in the new year.

2024 Past Year Review

What 20% of each column produced the most reliable or powerful peaks?

Highs

  • Hiking in nature (and just being in nature)
  • Daily habits and routines (Streaks)
  • Quality time with partner/ family/ friends
  • Travel

Lows

  • Burnout (particularly not scheduling (allowing) time to decompress/relax
  • Not facing problems head on
  • Not being honest or clear about expectations/wants
  • Doing things I don't want to do out of obligation
  • Letting work take over - hyperfocus (and associated overwhelm)

What I've already scheduled in for 2025?

  • Time away with partner [Booked ✅]
  • Weekends at home with parents [Booked ✅]
  • Hiking (See 100 Club - Hiking (2/100))
  • Travel - Australia [Pending ⌛]

Forget New Year’s Resolutions and Conduct a ‘Past Year Review’ Instead (#559) - The Blog of Author Tim Ferriss
I’m often asked about how I approach New Year’s resolutions. The truth is that I no longer approach them at all, even though I did for decades. Why the change? I have found “past year reviews” (PYR) more informed, valuable, and actionable than half-blindly looking forward with broad resolutions. I did my first PYR after … Continue reading “Forget New Year’s Resolutions and Conduct a ‘Past Year Review’ Instead (#559)”

2024 Milly Awards

Big up My First Million - one of my two favourite podcasts that I never miss an episode of (the other one being the Tim Ferriss Show). Shaan and Sam are a constant inspiration to me and one of my favourite episodes of the year is the Milly Awards. I enjoyed the format so much that I thought I would copy it here.

Best Investment of The Year

Daily habits and routines using the Streaks app.

Worst Investments of The Year

There is no single bad investment but there are lots of missed opportunities e.g.

Biggest Personal L

Worrying about the future while traveling Australia - not allowing myself to relax and enjoy it. I was on the trip of a lifetime and I spent most of the time worrying.

Coolest Moment

Sunset hikes in Australia

Life Hack of the Year

Using Whatsapp as a notes app and to crush my fear of keeping in touch with my friends. Blog post coming soon.

Billy of the year

Charlie Munger (RIP) - Poor Charlie's Almanack was phenomenal - and everything I learned subsequently.

Close second - James J Hill - Railroad Baron. Listen to this Founders episode.

Frame Breaking Person

Nick Gray - I was blown a his episode on My First Million (bellow) - it's simply a must listen. He has high agency coming out of his ears, and marches to the beat of a different drum. His blog inspired me to start this blog.

Biggest change for next year

Lot of big changes planned (I can't ruin the surprises - remember real bad men move in silence).

One thing I can share is that I'm gonna make 2025 the year of the blog - this blog right here is gonna be my digital home.

ChatGPT Journal Analysis

This became such a beast that it has now moved to a seperate post - here.

Simplify all the feedback and advice into 3 bullet points of 20 words or less:

  • Prioritize ruthlessly: Focus on one high-impact goal daily; eliminate distractions and low-value tasks.
  • Be present: Align actions with values, approach challenges as opportunities, and savor the process over rushing results.
  • Optimize energy: Design your day around peak energy hours, balancing intense focus with deliberate recovery and mindfulness.
ChatGPT Journal Analysis - 2024
I keep a daily journal where I answer mostly the same questions everyday. Mostly I just write what I’ve been up to, what I’m worried about and what I’m grateful for. Usually I don’t to anything with these entries but this year I’m going to feed them to ChatGPT and

2024 was easily one of the best years of my life. I travelled widely, experienced new things, habits I've been building for 5-10 years have finally cemented as the foundations for further growth.

I'm grateful for everyone and everything in 2024 and I'm excited and hopefully f0r 2025
